Fashion vs. Style: Understanding the Key Differences

Introduction

The terms fashion and style are used interchangeably in the context of clothing and personality, although, there is a major difference between the two. The two may be used at different times to explain different concepts although they may at times be used interchangeably. Fashion is in the trends whereas style is an expression of one’s personality which stands the taste of time. Here is a closer look at what separates the concept of fashion from that of style.

What is Style?

Outlook is an expression of character. It is not just clothes, it's about how a person decides to present themselves in a long-lasting and sustainable manner. Style can be defined as that person’s look, and this includes his or her dress, hairstyle, or even accessories. It’s enough to say that style is rather free from Trends or rules, as everything in it is based on preferences, comfort, and individuality. Traditional individuals have their pins on the minimalist and retro style; on the other hand, risk-takers have their pins on the edgy and ‘gross’ style. This is what makes personal style so exciting and easy to remember.

What is Fashion?

This means that fashion contrary to what most people believe is not the type of clothes that is in vogue at a given period. It’s the herd movement, reflecting what designers, retailers and influential personalities present as the ‘it’ look of the given season. Fashion is not constant, it transverses; differs from exquisite fashion shows and street fashion pologamy. These trends may at some time serve to make up an entire period though they are usually fleeting and are quickly replaced as newer ones are invented. Fashion moves rather fast and those who love it know that it is something rather fascinating but can be rather hard to follow.

Key Differences Between Fashion and Style

  1. Timeless vs. Trendy: There is a great difference between style and fashion because the former is always long lasting and the latter is always temporary. A person who perceivably has a laid down style may or may not conform to the bandwagon and instead opt for apparels that complement his/her disposition. On the other hand, a fashionable person will update his or her clothing as per the four seasons, maybe even more frequently.
  2. Individuality vs. Collectivity: A style is the extension of individuality, which does not depend on the clothing of other people. Fashion on the other hand is a collective action of designers, magazines and influencers to set trends and sell the trends.
  3. Self-Expression vs. Industry Influence: Fashion is an individual decision and a statement, which did not evolve as the result of exterior factors. Fashion belongs to a mass industry and concerns the supply of clothing trends with mass appeal rather than the individual supply.

The Intersection of Fashion and Style

It is significant to discern between fashion and style as the two terms co-intersect. Street style, for instance, combines personal and terminal fashion and shows how the fashion parade is used as an outfit in real life. Fashion lovers might argue that they take those segments from trends on the catwalk and use them for their own unique style, the best of both worlds.

The Bottom Line

Fashion and style should not come in a package that is quite opposite to one another. A lot of people like to personalise their appearance by incorporating trendy outfits along with some flamboyant style.
